Press: New Turn in Debate Over Law on Marriage
The fight over a proposed same-sex marriage law here heated up this week as the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of
Washington said that if the law passed, the church would cut its social
service programs that help residents with adoption, homelessness and
health care. "The Catholic Church hierarchy is at a crossroads," said the Rev.
Dennis W. Wiley, the co-chairman of Clergy United for Marriage Equality
and the pastor of Covenant Baptist Church. "They must decide whether
they are in the charity business for charity's sake, or if imposing
their will on the D.C. City Council and the citizens of the district is
their primary interest." Read more here.
Press: The Catholic Church versus the D.C. Council
D.C. Catholic leaders say forcing the archdiocese to provide adoption
services for gay couples, health benefits for gay workers or space for
gay events puts at risk services the church gives thousands of poor

Church was running a "cynical political ploy" by threatening to "turn
their backs on thousands of D.C. Catholics" and other residents. You can read this story here.

WASHINGTON - More than 100 pastors and faith leaders voiced their support for same-sex marriage in D.C., standing in stark contrast to protests a month earlier by other pastors.
The pastors, mostly from African American churches, wanted a referendum reversing the D.C. council vote recognizing same-sex unions from other states. The latest protest, pastors from a range of denomination, support same sex marriage and say civil rights should not be put to a vote.
"God is love and love is for everyone," said Rev. Dennis and Christine Wiley, Covenant Baptist Church.
